The first quantitative in situ measurement of water on the Martian surface has been reported by profs. Iain Campbell, Joanne, O'Meara and Ralf Gellert. Their measurements and simulations show that this white subsurface soil is a possible reservoir for at least part of the water suspected from orbiter studies to exist in equatorial regions.
